Child has deformity in toes. Family history of gout. What should be our next step?

I have an 8 year old son that for the last 6 weeks he started having one toe that was red and swollen (there was some initial oozing at first); then 2 weeks later, the other toe. What we also started to notice is that both toes are being bent towards the other toes. Its tender to the touch as well. We went to two podiatrist and one had said it may have been a bacteria infection and the other said it may be yeast infection . All took cultures and found that he does indeed have yeast and prescribed a topical medication and we were told it would take anywhere from a month to two months to get better. What we re also concerned now is the deformity of his toes...and noone in either family has the big toe going sideways (his toes are also longer than the other ones and we ve been very careful to get his shoes to the right size based on his big toes length. We ve now been reading that he may potentially have gout ...and that does run in the family; his grandmother. What should be our next step?
