Child Bitten By Dog, Taken Tetanus Toxoid Injection. Chances Of Rabies ?

Iam a community pharmacist, a boy of 4years plus was bitten by a neighbor dog. The owners of the dog brought the dog hospital card that was still valid.the dog next appointment is next year.the boy in question was then given tetanus toxoid injection but after about 10 to 12 days ,the dog died after exhibiting furious character. Does it me that the dog has rabies and what is the hope of the small boy.though they started given anti rabies yesterday.

Hi,
Thanks and welcome to HCM.
The dog died after exhibiting furious character means the dog is rabid.
The child should be given antirabic vaccine (Rabipur) one injection IM on 0.3,7,14,30 and 90th day.
The incubation period of for Rabies virus is minimum 2 months.
There is every chance the boy may not suffer from RABIES.
Had you started ARV right from the day of bite then there is 100% guarantee that the boy will not suffer from Rabies.
Hope this answer will serve your purpose.
I shall be happy to answer any more queries.
Take care.Dr.M.V.Subrahmanyam.
