Child. Severe Tummy Pain, Very Cold Body. History Of High Fever For 3 Days. Diagnosed Viral Fever. Advice

Hi doctor, my 15 months old son has had high fever for more than three days. I got him checked in medical centre. we were told he may have viral infection and just keep an eye on him. Around midnight tonight he woke up screaming and his body just act like be is in tummy pain with curling body and leg kicking. I touch him and he feels really cold. I test his temp with three thermometer, two on ear one under arm, all of them showing temp between 34-35. Is this normal??? I instantly wrap him up. His hand and feet feel like coming out of ice and his back is not warm at all. Okay have a different feeling to my husband as he is telling me not to trust the thermometer and our son is not tooo cold to his icey cold hand. Should I be concerned of my son health? 6 hrs earlier he was having 39.5 degree.
Thanks for help!

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern and there are two main issues which you want me to address:
1. Woke up screaming.
2. Low temperature.

Your son can wake up screaming for any number of reasons like a bad dream, pain, etc. Unless you specify the exact place where is complaining of pain it shall be difficult for me to provide a reason for his waking up screaming.

You have done the right thing by wrapping up your son which shall build up the temperature to normal over some time. It is not unusual for the temperature to fall following a dose of acetaminophen/paracetamol. Another reason for this low peripheral temperature can be when the child's core temperature is rising fast at which point he may even shiver.

In case the temperature is reducing over the past 3 days then it is good otherwise a re-evalutation by the treating doctor shall be advisable.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your son an early recovery.
