Child. Grunting After Each Breath, Breathing Through Mouth. Diagnosed Negative For Enlarged Adenoid. Problem With Lungs?

My child grunts almost after every breath. When she eats, she tries to breath through her mouth causing her to skip breaths. She breathes out of her mouth most of the time, not her nose. The Ent specialist said that it isnt an enlarged adenoid however he would shave it down some. Should she seek furthur medical attention? Should I go along with the andenoidectomy hoping that it cure it or maybe it is a problem with her lungs.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

As you have not mentioned the age of your daughter it is not possilbe to give a very definite advice. Adenoids do remain enlarged in children by 5-7 years after which they reduce in size. As the ENT specialist has said that the problem is not due to adenoids then there is no reason for adenoidectomy.

The grunting after every breath can be due to other reasons too. I suggest that you discuss with your doctor and try to exclude asthma as a cause of it.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter all the best.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Breathing through mouth may be a sign of some obstruction in nasal airway pathway.

But grunting is a sign of lung pathology.

If there are no enlarged adenoids associated with mouth breathing or grunting, the benefit of adenoidectomy may be questionable.

I advise you to take your Pediatrician opinion and proceed further with complete evaluation and investigations.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
