Chest Pain While Drinking Water. Feels Like Lump In Throat. Difficult To Swallow. GERD?

Hi, I m a 32 year old female in my last semester of nursing school. Two days ago I was drinking a glass of water and I began having severe chest pain like something was pooling in my chest. It went away after a few minutes, but now I feel like I have a lump in my throat which makes it difficult to swallow . I have had no other signs/symptoms prior to this experience. Now when I drink water it sounds and feels like it s gurgling while exiting my esophagus . Am I experiencing GERD?

Hello, Nikka0079,
I understand that you are in the last semester of nursing school.
I am sure you are under a lot of stress trying to catch up.
Feeling of "Lump in the throat" can mean two things.
"Globus hystericus " is the term used for severe anxiety reaction.
The other is related to GERD. If you are experiencing difficulty
swallowing , that is more serious. The damage from the acid reflux
could be considerable with severe spasm or stricture. You may need
to have an esophagram (Upper GI series) to see if there is problem.
Sometimes, cold liquids can cause contractions in the esophagus
and this could give you the type of symptoms that you are having.
You can always try taking a PPI like Omeprazole,Lansoprazole etc.
once or twice a day to see if the symptoms go away or get better.
Hope this addresses your concerns. Good to have you on board as
a nurse. We could use more !
I wish you the very best.
