Centenarian With Low Body Temperature And Loss Of Appetite. Have Anemia And Hemorrhoids. What Could This Be?

Hi Dr.,

My mom celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday. Presently her body temp. is 94.8. Her history is as follows. She has severe Aortic stynosis but her current problem is Anemia (low hemoglobin count). Her Dr. put her on an Iron supplement 3 X daily 65mg, 325mg Ferrous Sulfate. Her only other meds are Lasis and potassium.

Her count has increased to 8.6 on a blood test about 1 1/2 weeks after the initial one which was 7.4. She is also taking a stool softener. We recently stopped the stool softener since her stool has been very soft. She has also lost her appetite having 1 meal and 1 1/2 bottles of "Insure daily". She complains of stomach pains which is one reason she doesn't want to eat. This has been an ongoing problem for quite some time. Her Dr. has treated her with several meds figuring it might be an ulcer to no avail. We can't test her with any scans or oscopies since she cannot withstand those tests. Her weight has been about 79.5 for this month which is down from about 82 last month. In the past couple days her weight dropped to 76.5 in my opinion because she hasn't been eating much. In the past when she eats she maintain her weight. She is also bleeding rectally. From the past we assume it is from hemroids. The blood is bright red. Our concern at the moment is the low temperature. What do you think and suggest? Thank you for your opinion. Regards , Robert

Congrats and wish your respected mother many more years of happy life .I feel bleeding per rectum ;which is bright red meaning by that it is either from hemroids or rectum ;is root cause of her problem I understand that subjecting a patient at this age for many test is trouble some but to know the cause of bleeding local examination of anus, and lower part of GIT is essential by colonoscopy .If blood loss continues iron may not sustain the Hb and weight and temperature , Low Hb leads to ;Low body oxygenation and circulation leading to low temperature At this age a growth or chronic ulcer in lower GIT to be ruled out
I am sure in hand of a competent doctor she will stand the tests and will recover as God is with her
Take care of your mother and wish her early recovery
