Cause Of Abdominal Cramps Despite Normal Bowel Movements?

Good morning Doc. I am 42 years old. Ever since my 2nd c-section 5 years ago, I have been suffering from severe abdominal cramps. The pain is worst when I wake up in the morning and stays with me for a week or so. It then subsides for a couple of months and starts again. I have done a ct scan and an ultrasound but showed nothing. Bowel movements are normal throughout, although at times I could have loose stools but not linked to my pain. Ever since my c-section I have also had irregular periods, with a cycle of more than 60 days even though I have always had very regular periods. I have also done a hormone blood test and numerous vaginal ultrasounds but always OK. What could the cause be for these painful cramps and why do they come and go? I have been to see both a gastroenterologist and a gynae but both could not provide me with answers nor treatment for my symptoms. Thanks.

Thank you for your question!

I understand your concern. According to symptoms explained by you, it seems to be the condition called "Irritable bowel syndrome" (ibs).

It is disease characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits. ibs has no known cause. It commonly occurs in females.

For improving your condition, following measures may be useful:
a) Take low carbohydrate and fiber rich diet (like leafy vegetables, psyllium husk etc.)
b) If there is severe abdominal cramps, try hyocyamine tablets (buscopan) for symptom relief. Consult your physician for dosage according to your symptom severity.
c) Yoga practices and exercises which can help in decreasing your stress.

Your menstrual disorders may be due to stress related. Try above measures.

Thank you
