Can Using Long Cut Smokeless Tobacco Lead To Peeling Of Lips?

Bottom inner lip is peeling a little bit after use of long cut smokeless tobacco. This was only the 3rd time in my life I used it and the last time before this was 6 months ago. I'm wondering what this could be an if it's normal with smokeless tobacco users. It doesn't hurt when it peels but it left my gums sore and peeling a little.

Hello,
Thanks for your query.
Yes, it leads to peeling of lips. With the practice of "chewing" and "dipping," tobacco and its irritating juices are left in contact with gums, cheeks and/or lips for prolonged periods of time. This can cause leukoplakia. Leukoplakia appears either as a smooth, white patch or as leathery-looking wrinkled skin. It results in cancer in 3 percent to 5 percent of all cases. It causes constant irritation to the spot in the mouth where the wad of chew is placed and results in permanent damage to gum tissue. The injured gums pull away from the teeth, exposing root surfaces and leaving teeth sensitive to heat and cold.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
