Hi doctor, My dad has had tinnitus for the last 3 years. In the last month the ringing has gotten extremely worst, in the last 2 weeks hes been losing his everyday functions example( forgetting to spell simple words, cant operate his cell phone, cant operate easy everyday functions) My dad kept blaming the tinnitus for losing his ability for perform everyday functions He s got 3 MRI scans One MRI with contrast showed a little spot on the (pons.) We have an appointment with a Neurologist in a couple days I was wondering what can be done for him prior to the appointment. An if it was a Lacunar Infarction, Or Pons Stroke ? What can we do for him ? Thank you Mike

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, what you are describing is generalized deterioration in cognitive function. Tinnitus can also be because of neurological degeneration and thus a part of the whole spectrum. So, tinnitus will not be causing the inability to perform daily chores, it is the deteriorating overall cognitive function which is doing this. What MRI is showing is most probably a long term ischemic change in the brain. If that spot is showing anything which is recent, only then it can be of some significance. Meanwhile what you can do is to keep in control any comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension if he is having any.
