Can The Synthroid Medication Restarted Instead Of Prescribed Levothyroxine For High BP And UTI?

My mother was on Synthroid medication for many years (dosage 125), prescribed by her family doctor, for some reason she stopped taking it for a one month. She still has it (Synthroid) at home. Last week she got sick with very high blood pressure, UTI and ended up in the hospital for 4 days. She was released from the hospital today and was given a new prescription with levothyroxine (dosage 0.75) instead off Synthroid . I am not sure what to do now to take levothyroxine or Synthroid till we schedule to see her family doctor in the middle of next week. Thank you very much.

Hello, I'd be happy to help you with your question. To put it simply, levothyroxine and Synthroid are the same thing. One is a brand name and the other is generic. MDs switch it up sometimes as name brand medications are more expensive than generic.

What is important is that she continues to follow with her PCP to assure that this new dose is appropriate.

I hope this helps.
