Can Taking Thyroxine For Hypothyroidism Lead To Swelling In Joints?

Hi Doctor,
My wife is having hypothyrodism and is taking thyroxin 50mg everyday. Recently, she had swelling near her left hand joint. We did many check ups (abdomen scan, blood tests for ESR and CRP). Scan was normal except slight fatty lever. ESR and CRP levels were high. She has pain from shoulder up to joint on left hand. What could be the reasons and possible treatment.

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
I do appreciate your concern regarding to your wife's health.
The symptoms you described are not related to under active thyroid.
It seems to be a rheumatological problem and she needs treatment with steroids or nonsteroids antiinflamators, as prescribed by her physician.
If the TSH level resulted within the normal ranges with 50 mcg of levothyroxine, continue with this dose for other 6 months.
