Can Spotting Between Periods Be Symptoms Of Cervical Cancer?

In June I had a very light and short period consisted mainly of brown blood and very little red this occured at the regular time in my cycle and no problems, in July the same situation occured normal time just lighter and much shorter. This month it occured again but this time it was very light but spotting has continued for almost a week after. I'm very concerened about cervical cancer. I have never had an abnormal PAP, my last one was in March of 2010. I am currently scheudled for a PAP at the end of September but wonder if I should press to get in earlier.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Typically, bleeding from cervical cancer is non-cyclic, meaning it happens at random times, like after heavy activity or especially after sex, and it is not related to your menstrual cycle. It is usually also bright red and fresh, not brown.

Depending on your age and level of activity, having lighter and shorter periods can be normal. The fact that you have no history of abnormal PAPs is another reassuring sign that it is unlikely to be cervical cancer, especially if you are under the age of 35.

So I do not think you need to be concerned about cancer as the reason for your lighter periods. You can ask your GYN when you go for your PAP smear in September. He/she may do some hormone tests to see why your periods have been shorter.

I hope I adequately answered your question and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
