Can Spontaneous Pneumothorax Be Connected To Marfan Syndrome?

Hi, I am just freaking out because--well, I had a spontaneous pneumothorax on Saturday night. They put in a chest tube, and I see my doctor again on THursday. BUt, I was reading today that it may be connected with Marfan disorder. Especially seeing as I am thin, young (30), male, and non-smoker (and wasn t doing anything at the time of onset). And I am freaking out about the other more serious implications of Marfan like aortic dissection. Thanks-- YYYY@YYYY

Hello and welcome to HCM,
People suffering from Marfan syndrome are prone to get spontaneous pneumothorax.
Marfan syndrome also predisposes to aortic dissection as you have rightly mentioned.
You need to get the pneumothorax managed with chest tube.
Aortic dissection cannot be prevented all together but any chest pain should be taken as a warning and a cardio thoracic surgeon should be contacted at the earliest.
In fact you should stay in touch with a cardio thoracic surgeon and a pulmonologist.
The connective tissue defect in Marfan syndrome cannot be corrected but it can only be managed.
Refraining from smoking will have a positive impact on your body.

Thanks and take care
