Can Numb Hand, Facial Hair, Ovarian Cysts With Irregular Periods Be Adrenal Gland Disorder?
My daughter, age 21, has had numbness in her right arm on and off for one year. She has grown facial hair and has ovarian cysts, with irregular periods and No severe weight gain. We were told it was polycistic Ovarian disease. She is also always hungry and has cut down on the carbs and sugar which is helping a bit. She also has had infected pus pockets in her sinuses and 3 cellulitis infections recently. I've heard of people having been misdiagnosed with PCOS when they actually have an adrenal gland disorder. What do you think?
Hello, I can understand your concern regarding to your daughter's health. Your description is typically suggestive for PCOS. Irregular periods, hyperandrogenism manifested with facial hair, ovarian cysts in ultrasound make the diagnoses of PCOS. There may be pathologies of the adrenal gland causing hyperandrogenism also, but when the diagnosis of PCOS is clear there is no reason why to think of it. Anyway, if you want to rule out an adrenal problem you may check: - 17 OH progreterone level -DHEAS
If one of them results to be high, it is suggestive for adrenal production of testosterone.
