Can Lower Abdominal Pain Be Labor Pain Due To History Of Preterm Babies?

Hello. I am 32 weeks pregnant and having lower sharp abdominal pains. They are not too bad, but irritating. I have a history with 2 preterm babies born at 35 weeks. I have went into labor once already with this pregnancy and they stopped it. I also have a nephrostomy tube in my kidney as well. Am I in labor?

Hello and I hope I can answer your question today.

I do not know how old this question is, but I hope you already went to the hospital for evaluation because preterm delivery has a high recurrence risk and it can happen earlier in subsequent pregnancies. If your baby is born outside a hospital with a neonatal ICU at 32 weeks the prognosis may be grim. I strongly advise you to go to the hospital for evaluation as advanced preterm labor is difficult to stop. Also there is medication you can get at the hospital which helps reduce the baby's risks from premature delivery (called antenatal steroids) that is recommended in Western countries for preterm labor under 34 weeks.

I do not know why you have a nephrostomy- but if it was for kidney stones, they can also cause pelvic pain; but to rule out preterm labor, I strongly recommend you go tot the hospital to be monitored for contractions and a pelvic exam.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question and that you follow my advice and go to the hospital. Best of luck with the rest of the pregnancy, Dr. Brown
