The liver is involved greatly with cholesterol metabolism, however, the build up of plaque in the arteries is mostly associated with diet, smoking, high blood pressure, and genetics. To help with atherosclerosis, your best bet is to do the following:
1) cut down on fats and carbohydrates and have as much color in your meals (vegetables)
2) your cardiologist probably has you on at least an aspirin 81 mg daily
3) they also most likely have you on a statin (Crestor, lipitor, etc)
4) Exercise daily
5) measure your BP and make sure you keep it within normal range (120-140)
