Can Leakage From Follicle On Nipple Indicate Breast Cancer?

I was inspecting my breast and my nipples. I have large surface nipples and the follicles sometimes I make sure are clean. When cleaning I noticed leakage from one follicle. My sister just passed from breast cancer at 36 and I have family history of breast cancer... I am panicking. I had a mammogram last year. Is there any cause for concern?

Hello, Thanks for writing in to HCM.
It is a good to know that you perform a breast self-examination.

Leakage or discharge from the nipple can be alarming, but do not panic.
It is more commonly benign- due to vigorous stimulation/squeezing, hormonal imbalance, and other non-cancerous causes such as an infection, duct ectasia, etc.
However if it is reddish it is definitely abnormal.
With a strong history of breast cancer on the maternal side, I would recommend that you visit your doctor and get a physical examination as well as a mammogram & a sono-mammogram (Ultrasound study of the breasts).
Hope this helps. Do write in with any further queries.
Take care.
