Can Infection Of The Uterus During Pregnancy Re-occur?

When I was pregnant with my daughter I was told I was a strep B carrier, but that is would most likely not affect anything. Right after delivery I ended up with an infection of the uterus. Shakes, chills, chattering teeth, high fever. I was miserable. I delivered her at 39 weeks. With my son at 36 1/2 weeks, I got sick. All the say symptoms, but figured nothing of it really. After 4 days I went to the ER and after many tests it was determined it was an infection of the uterus. Baby s heart rate was too high and my fever was slowly climbing, at this time I was exactly 37 weeks, so the doctor induced delivery. My question is, my husband and I are talking about a 3rd baby. What are the chances this is going to happen again and will it happen even earlier in my pregnancy?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

First of all, your diagnosis was not clearly explained to you in my opinion. An infection of the uterus is called a pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and is usually transmitted from bacteria that is transferred from the vagina to the uterus through penetrative sexual contact. Some of the most common causes are STDs like gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Some other causes include any disruption of the equilibrium maintained between the internal and external reproductive system like penetration of the penis or a finger or object, insertion of an IUD, childbirth, etc.

But I have never heard of it occurring before childbirth, unless there is an underlying cause like gonorrhoea, etc. So please discuss things more elaborately with your doctor, and if at all you do have some of the above listed causes, then the recurrence would be inevitable during any stage of your next pregnancy.

Best wishes.
