Can I Take Diphenhydramine-HCl For Sleeping Problem During Pregnancy?

Hi there.I am 40 years old and just over 9 weeks pregnant and having real trouble sleeping. I have taken Nighttime Speep-Aid (Diphenhydramine-HCI) twice this week, as I have read on the internet that it was safe, as it is also used to fight allergies. Is it really safe?

Hi dear and thanks for your query.

Diphenhydramine has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA.
Animal studies have failed to reveal teratogenicity.
One study reported a statistical relationship between diphenhydramine use in the first trimester and cleft palate.
Diphenhydramine is only recommended for use during pregnancy only when benefit outweighs risk.
As my opinion you should try to sleep with another methods ,at least until your pregnancy will be 13 weeks.

All the best
