Can Hypothyroidism Affect My Unborn Baby?

Hi,i m 22 yrs old suffering with hypothyroidism having 7.6 as tsh level.nw i m 3 mnths pregnant now..doctor suggested to take eltroxin 100mcg and moreover we re informed thatthere is a chance to affect babys brain.is this safe to abort my child?we re so confused about this..is it possible to get a normal baby after birth..

Hi,

Welcome to HCM. I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

No need to worry. Hypothyroidism can increase your chance of miscarriage in pregnancy. Though mild IQ changes is possible significant mental retardation is unlikely. Your TSH is only mildly elevated, so your risk is minimal.

No need to go for abortion as the chance of getting an absolutely normal baby with normal IQ is your most possible out come. In my practice I have lot of normal babies born to severely hypothyroid un treated mothers. There is no recommendation for abortion in hypothyroidism.
