Can Headaches Be Caused By A Head Injury?

Hello. I was helping my family do construction in our backyard this past Saturday, and while helping lift a bag of sand, was hit by a heavy metal pole, which hit my forehead just above my right eyebrow. It hurt for a little while on Saturday, but went away. When I woke up on Sunday, I had a small bump where I was struck that was sore to the touch. When I woke up on Monday, the bump was still there and I had a mild headache that started about 5 PM which lasted until I went to sleep. Now it is Tuesday. The lump has gone down but is still a little sore to the touch. However, I have had a headache that feels very similar to a migraine last from the moment I woke up to this moment. Should I try to take some headache medicine? Or should I be concerned enough to get evaluated for a concussion or other head trauma? Thanks much!

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. As per your history, your injury appears to be non dangerous. However, headache may occur due to the hit and scalp swelling. Like swelling, headache will decrease and disappear with time. You can take Paracetamol or Diclofeanc for pain relief. Take drug after proper prescription.
Alarming symptoms of head injury which need full evaluation are loss of consciousness, persistent headache which is increasing in severity, no relief in pain even with pain killers, headache with vomiting, memory impairment, seizures or any new onset deficit. If you develop or observe any one of above symptom, you should consult a neurosurgeon for evaluation.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care.
