Can Flushing Rapid Heart Rate Be A Side Effect Of Atenolol?
I have been taken off atenolol after using it for many years and put on amlodopine. I am experiencing facial flushing rapid heart rate, and general jitteriness. My md has offered to put me on metoporolol sp? but isn t that just like atenolol , beta blocker? Should I just suck it up and give it a longer try?
Atenolol is unlikely to cause flushing and rapid heart rate. Atenolol is a beta adrenergic receptor (cardioselective) which is commonly used to treat high BP (hypertension), arrhythmia (increased and irregular heart beats) and other conditions.
Its common side effects include bradycardia (slow heart beats), fatigue, cold and clammy skin, and difficulty in breathing in patients with bronchial asthma.
It does not cause flushing or rapid heart rate.
Whereas Amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker) used alone or in combination with other BP lowering medication such as Atenolol can cause flushing, rapid heart rate, constipation and swollen ankles and feet as its side effects.
Since Metoprolol (also a cardioselective beta adrenergic receptor blocker) is more effective than Atenolol in reducing the heart rate hence your MD has prescribed it as an alternate effective to Atenolol. Continue taking it as per instruction.
