Can Fish Oil Supplement Be Taken With Loprin?

Is it okay to use fish oil supplement with Loprin? Are there any side effects of discontinuing loprin? Does loprin requires tapered discontinuation? Can fish oil be a good substitute for loprin? I don t have any heart problem, just been taking loprin for last several years to avoid stroke.

Hi & Welcome.

Incomplete data like age, gender, purpose of taking fish oil supplement?

It is not advisable to take fish oil supplement with Loprin.

Loprin (Aspirin) is an antiplatelet or "blood thinner" used to prevent thrombosis in the heart and blood vessels of brain thus preventing heart disease and stroke. It also has anti-inflammatory action so it may help to reduce the processes that lead to atherosclerosis, plaque rupture, and blockage of arteries.

1. When taken along with blood thinners like Loprin, fish oil supplement which contains omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may increase the risk of unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness, lightheadedness, red or black stools, coughing up or vomiting fresh blood or coffee ground blood, severe headache, & weakness.

2. Yes, discontinuing Loprin may be associated with an increased risk of thrombosis resulting in an increase the risk of cardiovascular events including stroke. Such complications occur within the first month after stopping Loprin.

3. If your doctor put you on Loprin, I would urge you not to discontinue it without your doctor's approval. Your doctor wouldn't put you on Loprin unless he or she believed you needed it. If you're experiencing undesirable side effects, like the bruising and bleeding issues, please discuss these with your doctor, he or she may want to take you off Loprin, lower the dose, or put you on a different medication altogether

On the other hand, if you started taking daily aspirin on your own because you've read it might be good for you or help prevent a heart attack or something, then you probably are OK to stop. Going to an every-other-day regimen is a great way to taper off the dose. Do that for a week, then go to every second day for a week, and so on, until you're down to once a week. At that point, you can stop.

3. Fish oil is beneficial in lowering high triglycerides in the blood.
Its efficacy in preventing thrombosis is not proved, hence it is not a good substitute for Loprin.

Hope these answer your queries.
