Can Early Onset Of Menopause Be Treated With BHRT?

I am 34 yrs old, going back to after I had my daughter at 30, I had lost most of my hair, I thought due to stress at the time. I then had irregular periods for about 2 years and felt miserable. I had no idea I was actually going through menopause! I went to the doctor, she did tests on thyroid which was normal and other tests but they never suspected menopause! So thinking back I was not on anything but went through chronic night sweats, insomnia ( still havent had a good night sleep for 4 years!) depression, mood swings and it goes on! If I had known I was going through menopause I would of tried to relieve my symptons, I thought it was all because of stress! Now 34, nearly 35, I have just been told (after finally going to the docs because I wanted sleeping pills as I was so exhausted and desperate for sleep she suggested to take my fsh levels, they were 103! She said I am post menopause! It has been nearly 12 months with no periods, but I have lost a lot of weight due to stress and trauma, so I thought that was why my period had declined. I have decided to go on bioidentical hormone therapy, I am on my fourth day, so early days yet. I have aged, my skin is thin and has gone wrinkly, I havnt told any of my friends as they are having babies and are in their prime. I cant understand how I could go through peri menopause, menopause and post menopause within 3-4 years! I have done alot of surfing on the net and has not found anyone else that has gone through this in such a short time. Is it too late to be taking the BHRT as my skin has already gone thin and wrinkly and feeling very old :(

Hallow Dear, I have gone through your detailed history and fully empathize your sufferings.

Did you have lot of bleeding immediately after the delivery? Some times due to that, some endocrine glands get affected leading to menopausal symptoms.

Now that you have been diagnosed menopausal, the immediate goal is to relieve you from the symptoms from which unfortunately you are suffering over last 4-5 years. You can get relief by Hormone Replacement Therapy.

The question is whether you opt for BHRT or HRT. Many International Menopausal Societies have stated that there is a lack of evidence that the benefits and risks of bioidentical hormones are different from well-studied nonbioidentical counterparts; until such evidence is produced the risks should be treated as if they were similar. A major safety concern in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is that there is no requirement to include package inserts, despite the potential for serious adverse effects (including life-threatening adverse effects) associated with HRT.

When you are on whichever type of HRT, you are not only getting rid of your symptom, but also trying to recoup the deficiencies created in the body due to Oestrogen deficiency; i.e. Osteoporosis.

However, I would urge you that you start taking HRT only on Gynaecologist advice. And further more be very much conservative and discriminative about how long to continue this therapy. Long term HRT do have ill effects on some organs with risk of cancer to certain organs like breast.

Monitoring after HRT is of utmost importance so also is many investigations to declare your suitability and safety for this treatment. Please undergo all the tests, rule out the history of malignancies of organs like breast, uterus in your family and then only opt for HRT.

Please understand that HRT is not to be taken casually and empirically. Gynaecologist's opinion and follow up is mandatory.

It is very difficult to include all the details of pros and cons of HRT or BHRT in such a short space. However, I have provided you some guidelines. I do agree that you are one of those who do need (B)HRT; however, take it scientifically under supervision.
