Can Diverticulitis Be Treated By Medication?

I was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis. Actually went to the ER and was admitted to the hospital. However, I was definitely not mentally prepared for this as it came as a shock to me. I left the hospital after spending 18 hrs. there & have since been to see a gastro specialist. While I was at the hospital, I was on antibiotics introveniously and I am now taking them orally. They did a cat scan at the hospital which revealed an abysess. My question is: can this be treated with antibiotics and a change in my diet or will I need surgery??

Hello,
Diverticulitis can often be treated at home with antibiotics, but this is not always possible when there is an abscess. Sometimes the abscess will drain and sometimes it requires surgery to drain or remove it. Sometimes a piece of colon even needs to be removed.
I wish you the best
