Can Diabetes Cause Alzheimer S Disease?

My Dad has and 2 grandmas have had Alzheimer s. i have heard lately of diabetes of the brain as a possible cause of Alzheimer s. What can I do to prevent Alzheimer s besides all the stuff you read about like excercise and challenging your brain. What about eliminating or reducing processed sugar in your diet?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neuro-degenerative disease that usually starts slowly with age and gets worse over time. It is the cause of 60% to 70% of cases of dementia.
The cause of Alzheimer's disease is still poorly understood. About 70% of the risk is believed to be genetic with involvement many genes. The disease process is associated with formation of plaques and tangles in the brain. Risk factors include a history of head injuries, depression or hypertension. Presence of diabetes has not been listed as the risk factor for development or progression of Alzheimer's disease.
There are no treatments available to stop or reverse the progression of the disease. Only supportive therapy can be instituted in such cases.
Keeping your brain active by involving in intellectual activities could help to prevent the disease development along with healthy diet and control of blood pressure.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
