Can cortisol levels be reason of weight gain ?

hi. in last 2 yrs i have gained 30kg for unexplained reasons which left me very upset. i started going to a personal trainer 4xp.w and making very healthy choices food wise and i still lost no weight.i went to endocrinologist when my weight kept creeping up and i did 2x urinary cortisol tests, the first aamount was 157 which doc said was high so i had scan of both brain and adrenals and lung and no tumour was found so doctor order 2nd free cortisol, this time my results were 491, i am 29 female and until 4 weeks ago i was on no medication at all, i am now on topomax 100 for migraine. now that cushings syndrome has been ruled out, what else could be giving me these results and causeing my weight gain.also my blood pressure is normal(normally it used to be low) it is causing depression now cause i just dont feel like myself!!! please help

Psychiatrist Dr. Ashish Mittal's  Response

Welcome to HealthcareMagic Forum,

As there is multiple symptoms like increase weight, brittle hairs and stoppage of periods. You need to focus for the cause of all these symptoms rather than worrying for weight only. You need detailed evaluation for liver, renal function test, thyroid profile and complete blood count.

Irrespective of cause following steps will be helpful to reduce weight:

• Buy one weighing machine preferably digital and measure weight every week, on a fixed day and on empty stomach in morning. Write weight in front of date in calendar or diary.

• Inform your family members about your plan to reduce weight as it will help to continue your motivation towards your goal.

• Make your dietary chart as what have you eaten in last day and calculate calorie value of that food. You can get calorie value of food items easily on net.

• Donot try to reduce weight very fast as it is harmful to health.

• In exercise plan: Incorporate aerobics and brisk walk in your exercise plan at least for 30 min a day.

I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
Wish you Good Health.
