Can Biting The Gums Near Wisdom Tooth Cause Abscess?

Can biting the inside of the mouth near the wisdom tooth cause an Abscess? A few days ago i was eating and bit the inside of my mouth, near the wisdom tooth, REALLY hard. The area is now really sore the gum next to my molar in that area is now swollen. Because its swollen it presses against the top molar when i close my mouth. Yesterday I was examining it with my finger, to test how it felt and some pus discharged from it. Today the swollen lump felt like it deflated but i pressed it again and some more pus came out. Is this an abscess or an infection from the initial bite? The pain and swelling only began AFTER I bit my mouth. I don t have any chips in the teeth of that area, nor any open cavities. I don t have any tooth ache and my teeth are not sensitive to hot or cold. My face is not swollen and I have no problem swallowing and no problem opening my mouth.

Brief answer: PERICORONITIS

Hi.
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the gums over and around your wisdom tooth (called as a Pericoronal Flap or Operculum),after getting bitten by your teeth must have got traumatized leading to inflammation and swelling of the gums and the condition is called PERICORONITIS.
Due to pericoronitis there is pus discharge seen from beneath the operculum especially when pressure is applied to it.

You should visit a dentist and get checkup done. An IOPAR (X-ray ) will be needed to rule out whether the tooth will erupt completely to the level of other teeth or is impacted( the wisdom tooth which has obstruction by bone or soft tissue over it and will not erupt by normal erupting forces).

First of all the dentist will irrigate the area between the operculum and the wisdom tooth with three solutions which are hydrogen peroxide,beta-dine or chlorhexidine and normal saline.

This will help to reduce infection, inflammation as well as flush out the area of any food debris.

If there would be any deposits like calculus ,plaque etc then removal has to be done using scaling instruments.

If there are signs of bacterial infection like fever, lymph node enlargement a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin and metronidazole has to be taken.

Ibuprofen can be taken to relieve pain if present.

Do warm saline gargles as it has a very effective role in reducing inflammation.

Always keep the area clean.

If the wisdom tooth is impacted then you should get it extracted as it can cause recurrent episodes of the same problem.

Hope your query is solved..

Thanks and regards..
