Can Antacids Cause Muscle Cramps In An Otherwise Healthy Individual?

Can antacids (Tums, Rolaids, etc.), cause muscle cramps? Are there other reasons for muscle cramps. I never had them before (I am 58), I am in good shape and workout but am getting bad muscle cramps. I stay away from caffeine and other diuretics, don t smoke, drink or do drugs and never have. Thank you

Hi

I understood your concern about the condition.

First of all I would like to appreciate that you are not an alcoholic or a smoker and maintaining a healthy life without bad habits.

I would like to say that Antacids wont cause muscle cramps. However avoid overuse.

Kindly note that muscle cramps are due to reasons like :
1.overuse or overexertion of muscles,
2. Dehydration of muscles
3. Muscle fatigue
4. Calcium, magnesium or pottasium deficiency
5. Side effects of drugs like diuretics(furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide and others)
6.Nerve injury etc.

U can get relieved from cramps
1.Please avoid over exertion if you do so.
2.Practice stretch exercises which is important before regular workout... It will help u relieve from muscle cramps.
3. Massage the muscles well
4. Take a bath with Epsom salt
5. Never get dehydrated
6. Diet with ample amount of food with Vitamins, minerals calcium, magnesium etc.

If you have further query I am here to hear you...

Thank you
