Can An Ultrasound Detect A Clot Leading To Swelling In Legs?

I am having pain and swelling in my right leg and knee. My doctor saw it a week ago and ordered an xray which turned out okay, no knee replacement needed. My blood pressure is not rising, but I am concerned as I had a clot in the same leg, about 7 years ago, and I have not fallen and cannot see any cause. It is much more swollen by evening, two or 2 1/4 inches larger than the other leg and it is painful - I have used a cane (my aunt left the cane here when she was ill). (I have records showing this swelling as I have measured each day The day my doctor saw it he did not think it was swollen much, but that was over a week ago and I am concerned, would like an ultrasound to rule out a clot. My husband thinks that the measurement could not have been accurate that one day.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There is a possibility of developing leg deep vein thrombosis (which is clot in simple terms) if you have had it earlier. Getting a Doppler ultrasound scan is a wise decision if you are having swelling and pain which is progressively increasing.
