An infection in the gums will cause infection in the heart (endocarditis) in someone with heart valve problems such as mitral valve prolapse. Not only the teeth or gums but any procedure that will cause contact with the blood stream such as a removal of a mole, etc can cause infection in the blood and thus the heart in these people. Always tell your doctor even with a rectal or pelvic exam that you have these valve problems so you can be premedicated with an antibiotic.
