Can Alcoholism Lead To Severe Cough And Panic Attacks?

I have a son who is 32 and I believe is well on his way to alcoholism. He has this horrible cough, and now having panic attacks. At first, I didn't relate the 2, but now I'm beginning to think it is due to his drinking. His father and grandfather were alcoholics, but his dad and I were divorced when my son was 3. I don't want him to continue this cycle. He has a 9 year old son, and I know alcoholism runs in families. Is the cough and panic attacks related to his drinking. ? It is hard for him to admit he has a problem. What do you suggest?

I am sure that your son also smokes. Smoking is a more likely cause for the cough although alcoholism might also have a role to play. The panic attacks however are directly related to alcoholism. Alcohol is responsible for what is known as Wernicke Korsakoff psychosis and probably your son is suffering from it due to deficiency of a B vitamin called thiamine. Please get in touch with a deaddiction counsellor about how the issue can be handled.
