Can Abortion Cause Uncontrolled Hunger Pangs?
Hi i am a 20yr old female and had a termination about a week ago. The pregnancy was about 6-8 weeks in and I have been suffering from incredible hunger since the operation, I find that even after a large meal I am still hungry, I will continue to eat until i suffer from stomach pains, once the pains have passed the hunger returns. Previous to my operation I only ate small meals and not as often as I should have, I am worried this is a negative side effect from the abortion.

Termination of pregnancy will not cause such voracious appetite. However, at this age, pregnancy may be associated with Thyroid dysfunction - may by Hyperthyroidism. After abortion, such condition continues causing voracious appetite. Hyperthyroid condition is known to be associated with uncontrollable voracious appetite and still loosing the weight. Please get your blood checked for Thyroid function Test; i.e. T3, T4 and TSH.
Thyrostatics (anti-thyroid medicines) like carbimazole, methimazole and propylthiouracil are used to treat such condition. However, you should report to the doctor, may be with the reports and get treated.
Even a stress also can cause such increased eating habits. Unexpected unwanted pregnancies do cause stress. However, organic conditions should be ruled out before labeling any psychological stress as causative for the condition. Such stress, if present may be managed effectively by a counsellor.
Please report your Physician for appropriate diagnosis and the treatment.
