Can A Respiratory Infection Cause Preterm Labor?

I am almost 31 weeks pregnant with di-di twins, and so far things seem to be going well. I recently seem to have developed what I believe to be bronchitis, however, and have been noticing an increase in contractions within the last 2 days. Would a respiratory infection increase my chances of preterm labor?

Hello,
Generalized infection, fever, urethritis or diarrhea can increase the risk of preterm labor especially when the uterus is over distended as in multiple pregnancy, hydramnios etc. You may have had cough associated with the bronchitis and it is this cough that could be exacerbating the contractions. Please contact your consultant to see if you need any observation. Take rest in left lateral position as much as possible. You should try to clear the infection as soon as possible and may also need to use tocolytics to keep contractions at bay. Hope this helps.
