Can Zipzor,Ultrim,Zoloft And Namenda Medications Cause Diarrhea?

I am caring for a 78 year old women who suffered a back injury from a car accident. She has fractured vertebra and nothing can be done due to osteoporosis. She is experiencing a lot of diarrhea. She is taking zipzor, ultrim, zoloft, and namenda. Is the diarrhea caused from the injury or drugs? Anything I can do to help stop this diarrhea?

Hello,

I understand your concern. Diarrhea is a known side effect of Zipzor, Ultrim and Namenda, whereas one of Zoloft's side effects is constipation. It seems like in her case, all three drugs have produced diarrhea as a cumulative side effect.
I would talk to her doctor, who, knowing her full medical history could decide to discontinue one or more of the drugs and make the appropriate substitutions. Zipzor could be substituted with another nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug that does not cause diarrhea, such as Motrin or Aleve. There are also many alternatives to Ultram which do no have diarrhea as a side effect.
Another alternative is to take an anti-diarretic such as Loperamide.
Ultimately, it is up to her doctor to decide on any change, omission or addition to her therapy.

Wishing you all the best.
