Can Xanax And Sertraline HCL Be Taken Together?

My husbands doctor has recommended that he takes xanax .25mg at night and sertralineHCL 25 mg every day. My husband has lung cancer but due to large amts. of radiation at Sloan Kettering his tumor is negligible. I m wondering if all this medication is safe. He is 86 years old and has always worried about his health. He thinks he is having panic attacks.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
yes both xanax and sertraline are safe. they have been prescribed in very low dose so at your husband 's age and metabolism it should not cause any problem. both will help to prevent panic attack if not controlled increase in dose ofsertraline is advisable. i would suggest you to look for side effects of xanax like sedation, sudden fall , increase in memory problems and regarding sertraline a check on your husband's electrolytes like sodium and potassium should be done
