Can Tegretol And Tramadol Be Taken Together?

i was prescribed Tramadol after a tooth extraction, as I have bad interactions w/ more popular pain killers. Then I read that there is a possible interaction between Tegretol (my seizure medication, and yes, the dentist was made aware of it) and Tramadol. Should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.

Avoid taking these two medications together.

Since Tegretol (Carbamazepine) is one of the most powerful liver enzyme inducers. When taken along with Tramadol (an opioid pain killer), Tegretol enhances the metabolism (clearance) of Tramadol from the body thereby decreasing its blood levels and thus reducing its efficacy in relieving the pain.
You are therefore advised not to take these medications together and consult your treating dentist/physician for an alternate effective pain killer whose efficacy is not reduced by taking Tegretol or adjust the dose of Tegretol.

Hope this will help.
