Can Penicillin VK Be Taken For Throat Infection?

Hi! I was just prescribed Penicillin VK for a throat infection. I m always nervous about potential side effects or an allergic reaction from antibiotics. I ve taken many different types of antibiotics before without any issues but never just penicillin. Is it likely that I may experience a bad reaction to this if I ve successfully taken other drugs in the same family?

Hi! Welcome to HCM.

I am glad you reached out. Let's discuss this question in detail.

Usually, one would not be allergic to drugs of the same class. The drugs that are in the same class as Penicillin are Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, and Methicillin.

These are known beta lactam antibiotics. Usually, someone who is allergic to one beta lactam is allergic to others as well.

Penicillin is often recommended for throat infection and it might be able to help. However, it would be best to take the medication after consulting a doctor.

I hope this answer has been useful to you.
