Can Norethisterone Help Stop Menstrual Bleeding?

I started taking Norethisterone yesterday (Monday) but my period has started today ( Tuesady) two days earlier than expected. If I keep taking the tablets as prescribe three times a day will it help stop the bleeding in the next couple of days as I am going on a beach/ pool holiday on Thursday and really did not want to have my period for this time?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Understand your concern
Noreethosterone (contain progesterone) help to stop menstrual bleeding but not in your case as your menstruation is already started.

Noeethisterone is prescribed drug and should be taken under the advice of gynecologist. Generally it should be started 5 days before the expected period date and should be taken for 5 days. Once you stop the drug bleeding will occur in 4-5 days.
But as you started very late and your period has been started already then noreethisterone do not help in stop the bleeding. Sorry to say but no medicine will helpful. Stop the norethisterone as it cause menstrual irregularity/hormonal imbalance.
Hope this may help you
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
