Can I Rely On Amaryl For Diabetes And Cholesterol?
I am diabetic since 14 years.
initially started with Amaryl 1/2 mg daily then for almost 10 years I was taking the same dose and BGL was OK.
4 years back my cholestrol was high and doctor given simvast 10 mg once daily.
Gradually Amaryl dose increased and until 6 months back I was taking Amaryl 2 mg daily (1 each M/E) and Simvast 10 mg 1 daily.
5 months back my BGL was very high HB1c - 11, then doctor changed Amaryl to 5 mg Tradjenta + Diamicron MR 60 1 Daily. After 2 months still result was not OK Fasting BGL is around 150.
I went to another Doctor, he advised Tradjenta and Diamicron will not work and he changed to Janumet 50/500 - 2 Tab Daily (1 morning and 1 evening) + Diamicron MR 60 - 1 Daily + he changed Simvast 10 mg to Lipitor 10 mg.
After 1 month taking Janumet 50/500 -2 Tab Daily + Diamicron MR 60 1 daily - result is HB1C 8.5; FBS 112; Then again Doctor change my medicines to Kombiglyze XR 5/1000 1 daily + Diamicron MR 60 1 daily and Lipitor 10 mg to Simvast 20 mg( I complained about pain in legs).
My question is: I was taking Amaryl for last 14 years and started with 1/2 mg and increased to 2 mg daily only then why doctors instead of increasing Amaryl dose started changing the medicines.

AMARYL belongs to sulfonylurea group and acts by stimulating the beta cells of pancreas ,which results in release of insulin.As the time passes,the beta cells loose their mass and efficacy to produce insulin and hence the more subsequent dose of AMARYL.
Just to avoid beta cells exhaustion,AMARYL has been switched to janumet or tradjenta,because these medicines don't exhaust the beta cells but rather preserve them.
