Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic
It is true that genital herpes is not totally preventable even with a condom, however the risk is reduced by 50% when condom/protection is used. The virus causing herpes is transmitted by close contact with infected skin or mucous membranes; a condom is not 100% protective against infection since it only covers the shaft of penis and therefore may leave infected genital area exposed. Since your sexual partner is infected with herpes therefore I would suggest you to get yourself tested for herpes. It would be appropriate to take up a blood test for herpes at 2 weeks after the last sexual act. Moreover if you notice any genital sores or ulcers you must get yourself checked with a dermatologist Or venereologist.
