Can Hydroxyzine Be Taken For Anxiety?

my husband was given hydroxyaine hcl 50 mg to treat anxiety attacks. can you tell me more about this drug and is it safe to take on a daily basis. His prescription says 1 every 8 hours, but we thought he was just supposed to take it when he has an anxiety attack. will this drug work for everyday neverousness? and what are the side effects??

Hydroxyzine is an anti-histaminic used for treatment of allergy, atopic dermatitis, cold, itching, and sometimes for the prompt control of anxiety or agitation. Dose for the prompt control of anxiety or agitation is 50 – 100 mg and may be repeated 4-6 hourly if needed.
It is not used as maintenance therapy for treatment of anxiety. Its common side effects are dizziness, ataxia, fatigue, drowsiness, hallucination, seizure, dry mouth, nervousness, dry mouth, involuntary movements, slurred speech, headache, paraesthesia, tremor, blurred vision, respiratory depression, pruritus, rash, urticaria, and allergic reaction.
Advice
For acute attack of anxiety
1.     Hyroxyzine 50 mg per oral; repeated after 8 hours as needed
For maintenance treatment of anxiety/nervousness
1.     Clonazepam 0.25 mg daily at bed time per oral for 1 month
