Can Huntington Chorea Be Diagnosed At Old Age?

I am a registered nurse and I have a question regarding Huntington Chorea. My neighbor has just been diagnosed with the disease and she is 67 years old. She had mild symptoms of jerky movements several years ago but they are now more pronounced. I have read articles that this disease is usually diagnosed around the age of 40-50. I was a surgical oncology nurse and have minimal experience with HD patients,Thank you for answering my questions. E mail address: YYYY@YYYY

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a dominantly transmitted neurodegenerative disorder with wide variation in onset age but with an average age at onset of 40 years. Huntington disease can be diagnosed in a broad distribution of age groups from 3 th 85 years with a peak at 40 to 50 years of age. Your neighbour might be one among those in whom Huntington disease has been diagnosed at 65 years of age.
