Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my mum suffered from Brain stroke 3 months ago. Now discharged back home and one of the medicine prescribed is to be taken before meal one per time (2 times a day). Please advise if it must be taken before meal. Can it be taken with other medicines after meal since we have difficulties serving her medicine and have to smash into powder form in order for her to swallow a bit easily.
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Ganaton tablets 50mg(Itopride hydrochloride), a prokinetic benzamide derivative unlike metoclopramide or domperidone has to be taken before meal. The dose is usually taken on an empty stomach about an hour before meals. Itopride is not currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States, nor is it yet approved in the United Kingdom. This may explain the apparent lack of patient information available in English compared to other similar classes of medication. However, this does not necessarily indicate that itopride is not effective or safe. In view of lack adequate information,it is not advisable to powder it with other drugs nor it can be given after meal. You can give tablet Ganaton OD 100 mg once a day before meal instead of tablet Ganaton 50mg twice a day.
