Can Clindamycin Be Taken When Allergic To Penicillin?
My son had an accident with a chain saw Saturday. The local ER prescribed clindamycin 300 mgs oral three times a day. He is very allergic to Penicillin. They kept wanting him to take a variation of Penicillin. Does this med have any form of the Penicillin in it?
Clindamycin belongs to Lincomycin group of antibiotics while Penicillin is a completely different group.. So in case if your son is allergic to Penicillin it is not necessary that he will be allergic to Clindamycin too.. So you can give him Clindamycin but in case if there are any symptoms after 1 or 2 doses immediately stop the antibiotic and consult an Emergency room.. But if you still have a doubt about giving Clindamycin then you can go for an allergic test so that compatible antibiotics can be confirmed and you can give them to your son without any fear.. However as far as your query about Clindamycin is concerned, do not worry it is not Penicillin..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
