Can Claritine Syrup Be Used For Dry Cough?

Can i use Claritine syrup for my 11 month old infant that has an irritating and persistent dry cough at night and in what dose. We live in Northern Nigeria where the weather turns cold, dry and dusty this time of year. He is also teething with a runny nose.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Claritine can be used for allergic rhinitis. But, if your chid is having dry cough then you should give cough preparation containing dextrometherphen, chlorphenaramine maleate.

Also consider antibiotics in case of fever after consulting with your doctor. If cough is more at night, you should use bronchodialator like salbutamol as a cough syrup.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Omprakash Ashokrao Deshmukh
