Can Cefalexin Be Taken For Toe Nail Infection?

I had an ingrown toenail removed 2 weeks ago and have been soaking 2x a day in epsom salt and putting that betadine on afterwards. Last night it looked all cleared up so I put nail polish on it tonight it is all red around the toe and sore to touch. My question is can I take cephalexin 500mg to clear up what looks to be an infection? I am leaving for a cruise in the morning.

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

Yes it can be taken however there are some better options for such infections and these are amoxicilin or clyndamicin so you should consult your doctor if there is no improvement on cefalexin. I suggest to use salty baths and antibiotic ointment locally. this may help as well and prevent nail removal.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
