Can Calpol And Meftal Syrups Be Used Alternatively For Fever In An Infant?

Hi Doctor. My 14 months daughter is suffering from fever. Visited doctor today and he suggested calpol 120mg with a dose of 4 ml thrice a day ( she weighs 7.5kg only but very active kid with correct milestones). I have her dose of calpol at 10:00 pm and by 1:30am she is running 102 above. I however started the sponge bath and immediately gave her a meftal p syrup. The temp has come down but now kindly advice when should I give her next dose of calpol? And how much ? Can I give her calpol 4 ml at 4:30 am again today ? Please suggest me. Regards

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Calpol syrup contains paracetamol, meftal-P syrup contains paracetamol and mefenamic acid.

The usual dosage for paracetamol is 10-15 mg/kg/dose. It usually works for a period of 6-8 hours.

Since you gave her a dose of meftal-P syrup at 1.30 a.m., it is not necessary to give her the next dose at 4.30 a.m. provided her temperature is 102°F (38.9°C).

Cold sponging is advised to reduce the body temperature.

If fever persists for a period of more than 3-4 days with other associated symptoms, consult with a pediatrician.

Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhaskar Neog
