Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a low TSH level .05 and my T3 T4 and normal. Every test they have done comes back normal. I have no symptoms. I did have some hair loss last year but my TSH was normal at that time. I am 51 and in menopause. The only thing I am doing different is taking 1000 mcg of biotin. Can this give me an a false low TSH level. I asked my Dr and he said no and he wants to do more test, radioactive uptake test. I think I should stop taking biotin and if TSH still comes back low, then do the uptake test. Do you have an opinion? How long should I be off Biotin before I have a TSH test done again?

Can Biotin Cause Low TSH Levels And Hair Loss?
Hello, Welcome to HCM. Biotin vitamin may be associated with hair loss but very unlikely to be related to low level of thyroid stimulating hormone. Also, the fact that you suspected here whether 1000 mcg biotin can cause false low TSH or not. Then i wold not think about those possibility now. Your low TSH value is indicative of hyperthyroidism which needs medical attention promptly. You can stop taking further biotin supplement and may go for radio-active uptake test which will confirm if there is thyroid issue. You should stop the tablet before 1 to 2 week of going for testing.Your physician may advise you further ,so kindly consult him. Regards,
