Can Amoxicillin Cause Diarrhea?

My grandson is 9 months old. He has to take dilantin for seizures. He is sick now (congetion) and taking amoxicilan. Since taking that, his bottom is extremely red, he threw up, he has diarrhia, and now he won't eator take his bottle. Could he be allergic to the amoxicilan?

Hi,

1. It is a general rule that one in five children who take antibiotic(s) will develop diarrhea and is more common in children under 2 years with any type of antibiotic and if he is throwing up, refusing to feed [adverse drug affect of Amoxicillin] thus important is to take him to a Pediatrician since 'dehydration' can set very early/easily in children.

2. Till then make sure to give him ORS solution [as per norms] and avoid fruit juices which can make diarrhea worse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Munish Sood
